Navigating an Unexpected Layoff as a Fraud-Fighter w/ Meredith McCleary

Published on: 7th September, 2022

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

Over the years, those of us in the fraud-fighting industry have sometimes joked about "job security". As long as fraud was still targeting businesses & banks, it was assumed that we would always have a job, unless we wanted to leave for our own reasons.

But, one harsh reality in 2022 has been the hundreds, if not thousands of layoffs (or redundancies) of professional fraud-fighters in various business types. Whether it's in consumer fintech, the banking industry, fraud-tech vendors sales & marketing, or ecommerce, we have seen LinkedIn post after LinkedIn post about seeking new opportunities.

One of those people recently impacted by this wave was Meredith McCleary; a passionate fraud-fighter & Certified Fraud Examiner who was previously in the mortgage & lending industry. Meredith took action, and has impressed the host of this podcast with her vulnerability, tenacity, and compassion for others in similar situations. So, she was invited on Fraudology to share:

  • Some of the fraud tactics she witnessed while in the mortgage industry for 9+ years.
  • What she did in the following hours, days, and weeks after feeling like the rug was pulled out from under her & was laid off with no notice
  • How she has leveraged LinkedIn to build a network & help countless others in a similar situation as she has found herself in
  • The advice she has for other job seekers in the fraud prevention/investigations industry should they experience a layoff or redundancy, or even if they're still employed, but looking for a new role for their own reasons.
