EP23: Diagnosing E-Commerce ATO issues

Published on: 27th March, 2021

It has been an entire year since the Covid-19 pandemic changed almost every facet of our lives. For those in e-commerce fraud prevention, depending on the vertical of your business, you either saw a massive drop in sales & increase in refunds & chargebacks (e.g. in-person event tickets, travel and related expenses, etc) or a huge increase in sales, and often fraud that followed (essential retail items, food delivery, etc.). At the beginning of this episode, Karisse shares some of her memories from the beginning of the pandemic when panic, uncertainty, and questions ensued.

Additionally, Karisse talks about the need for diagnosing a company's ATO (Account Takeover) problems prior to selecting or investing in a solution. She shares examples of various current methods of account takeovers being utilized by cyber criminals, and also discusses multiple goals or intentions of the ATOs, and how these are important to select the right prevention strategy for the type of attacks your companies experiences. Not all solutions claiming to prevent ATOs will work on all methods and/or goals of the attacks. It is equally important for solution providers to understand this, in order to target the companies that need their services most, and not risk disappointment or overpromising/underdelivering.

If you work in online fraud prevention, chances are you've caught the "bug". The bug that makes you passionate about identifying & preventing cybercriminals from getting away with stealing from your company, or your client's companies. Most people who have made cyber-fraud their career have the perfect balance of analytical and social skills, a strong sense of justice and the curiosity that will drive you to go down every path of information until you "crack the case".

Just like sociology is the study of social behavior, and psychology is the study of human behavior, Fraudology is the science and study of fraud.
